After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in 1973, I needed a studio.
I stood in the Stockholm studio queue and was called to the former bachelor hotel at Glasbruksgatan 25, which was empty.
It was Vera Nilsson's suggestion that it should become a studio building for artists in Stockholm.

The rooms were drawn.
I was given ticket number 2 to choose from and took a room facing north, prospects towards Skeppsholmen, Gröna Lund, Gamla Stan and close to Slussen.

The city is an endless web, never finished, never finished. The past broods in the present, the heavy buildings and objects that in Jan Runefelt's art are glimpsed in a cloud-like glow are constantly in motion. With his gaze, the artist has eavesdropped since the beginning of his creation.
and re-created this our capital where views and observations rest on their history – that is, in fact, the canvases of the paintings are often bible-thin, forgotten telephone directories.
pages. In them the past still reigns, but now in (my cousin) Jan's work, together with the barren but tender gray-white, times seem to merge together.
Dusk-dull work, but still somewhat cheerful, which makes Jan Runefelt feel compassion for the shadowy figures standing and dreaming by a railing or those hurrying past, on their way away.

In a quiet darkness stands an old stove, the black-gray shades speak to the underlying addressees, but they are only sensed as secrets from another time.

The city is a constant stream; buildings, subway stations, people waiting long hours, huddled together, as if their shadows are protecting them from the bitterly cold wind.

Jan Runefelt's palette evokes a unique play of light in several works, gentle multi-colored ripples over Stockholm's landmarks – Gröna Lund, Slussen, the water followed by Katarinavägen. Spotty reflections, streaks of gold leaf illuminate, illuminating both the clumsy building and
The lonely, windy autumn waiting room for the bus.
